What's in your glass
A Hill Country tasting room is just one part of the story. Many Texas wines start with grapes grown in the Texas High Plains, where warm days and cooler nights shape the harvest. Ask where the fruit was grown, what's estate-grown, and which bottles use Texas grapes.
Look for Tempranillo, Mourvèdre and Tannat among the pours. Compare a lighter red with a fuller-bodied bottle, and ask your host which local meal they'd pair with it.
Viognier, Roussanne and Vermentino are worth exploring alongside rosé. A shaded patio, a food pairing and an unhurried tasting make a lovely afternoon.
Build around a few nearby tastings, not a race down the trail. Add lunch, independent shops and an overnight stay in Boerne or Fredericksburg.
The Wine Trail
Texas's busiest wine road runs east from Fredericksburg through Stonewall to Hye, with tasting rooms every mile or two. Pick three or four, book weekend tastings ahead, and go Tuesday to Thursday for room to breathe.

Boerne's Main Street is a walkable mile of antiques, boutiques, galleries and wine rooms, with River Road Park and Cibolo Creek a block away. Pair it with Sister Creek or Saint Tryphon just outside town.
